Driving Historical Question
Who were the leaders during the civil war and what did they contribute? Who were the main groups of people during the civil war and what did they contribute?
Lesson Introduction
Will introduce the lesson with a think-write-pair-share. Students will be asked to write the objective in their journal and will answer a general questions answering it with bullet points in their journals. The questions will be: Who are the main leaders during the civil war? The second question will be: What did people do during the civil war? War today is usually fought somewhere else far away from us, so what would it be like to have war happening in our own backyards or right up the street? Students will think about these questions at different times, write an idea down, and then share it with their elbow partner. Will discuss main ideas as a class before getting into the reading and activity.

Teacher will guide students in their think-write-pair-share in the beginning of class and conduct class management in the discussion.
Teacher will pair students up into groups of 2 and give instructions:
Students will be paired up into groups of 2. Each student will be given 3 different people or groups that were part of the civil war. Students will design their own foldable to be used and will find out who the leader or groups of people were during the civil war, and their contributions. Working together they will decide on the first person or group they wish to work on. They will read the section and fill out the first part of their own foldable together. Then the last two sections of the foldable they will take one each and work on their own charts individually. They will become an expert on their own section and later talk to their partner about their section. The partner will take the information given to them to fill out the rest of their foldable.
Students will be given a vocabulary sheet of “word, definition, visual” that they can fill out as they come across different words in reading the textbook. They can share the definitions that they found in the textbook with their partners. They will come up with their own visuals.
Teacher will show students how to create their foldable and how to label each section. Teacher will be able to walk around the room and help the pairs that are lost or confused by the foldable instructions.

Student Engagment
Students will be designing their own foldable. While reading the sections on different leaders or groups of people, they will decide on who these people were and their contributions that they played in the civil war. They will take this information and present it to their own partner. They will have at least 2-3 bullet points in each box, and can have more if they decide that it is information that is needed. They can color the boxes or add a design to them if they have time.
Lesson Closure
Students will look at all the information that they have gathered in their foldable and write a quick write in their journal looking back at the questions that were asked in the beginning of class with a main focus on:
What did people do during the civil war? War today is usually fought somewhere else far away from us, so what would it be like to have war happening in our own backyards or right up the street?

Assessment
Think-Write-Pair-Share students will work with their elbow partners.
Working together students will be able to go over the first section of the foldable together.
Students will be able to write their own section of the foldable on their own and present it to their partner.
Students will write a quick write in their journal reviewing the questions asked in the beginning of the class session.

Accommodations for English Learners, Striving Readers and Students with Special Needs
Students may work on the whole foldable in their pair groups. Working together they can fill out their vocabulary sheets and the foldable in their pair to better understand the material and get through the reading. They can take turns in reading the sections out loud to one another and it won’t be as awkward because other groups of students will be working together and presenting the material to one another.
