Why Study The Civil War?
In 8th grade it is important to study the civil war that the United States had. It is a big part of our national history, and has its footprints leading up to more modern history that has had an impact on the United States all the way up to today’s world. The civil war is still seen as a big part of people’s history and background because we are still having discussions about things from the war. An example being the confederate flag and if it should be allowed to fly in a state capitol of South Carolina or taken down, it is still part of the Southern United States history. Since it is part of the history of the south and people from the south had ancestors that died in the war, does the flag symbolize their beliefs, or is it a symbol of hate?
Questions about the civil war are still being brought up today. It is important to identify and understand this part of our history and where the beliefs of a nation were at this time. It can be followed up to the civil rights movement that happened many years later.
